As an individual taught strict American midwester pronunciation in the mid-1950s, I can guarantee that -ed was often taught as a separate syllable within my family. The obvious caveat is that the words -ed, as spoken and not as taught, were very cut and precise, but were not uttered as an additional syllable. But the teaching was clear. I now have a seven-year-old, and I taught him to pronounce as a separate syllable and to convey my own understanding of the correct pronunciation of words. Quarreled is pronounced Kwo-r`lled. It`s two syllables. I tried in American, and I managed to get rid of the 2nd syllable by dropping it.
